These are common problems with washing machines and washer driers which can be fixed using a methodical fault finding approach which will allow the most cost effective solution to be found for the customer.

Washing Machines Advice

Remove all items from clothing pockets and fasten all zippers. Items left in pockets get stuck in the drain pump which cause drainage faults. They can damage the drain pump and also cause damage to the drum.

Read the manufactures manual. These can now be found online, very often free to download. The manual will indicate what exactly each wash programme does, what loads can be put in and also give advice on how to solve some common machine faults.

Wipe door seal dry after use and leave the door slightly open to allow air inside. Under – dosing with detergent causes marks to build up on the door seal and mould to build up also. Make sure you are using the correct dosage of detergent.

Do not try to open the door when the door lock light is on as many door handles are broken when this is done. Wait for the few minutes after the machine has finished washing before trying to open the door. This is a safety measure to prevent the door being open when the machine is running.

Perform a maintenance wash to prevent the machine becoming smelly. Bad smells in the machine are not caused by any fault in the machine and an engineer cannot fix this for you. The smells are caused by bacteria in the machine. The maintenance wash will help prevent mould build up on your door seal also.

The newer machines with “eco” wash cycles and the trend towards washing at 30° C has made the both the problems of machines smelling and door seals going mouldy worse. The manufactures recommend about a month interval between maintenance washes. A maintenance wash is done with no clothes in the machine so that the detergent used cleans only the machine. You should use only a good brand powder or tablet, liquid detergents or capsules are of no use for this. A high temperature wash cycle(without pre wash) is used, at least 60 °C but 90°C or 95°C is better as this is more effective at killing the bacteria.

Do not overload the machine. This not only damages the machine but causes poor washing results. Leave about a 10 cm between the top of the clothes and the top of the washer.
Always select the correct wash programme for the items to be washed paying attention to the textile care labelling system(http://www.care-labelling.co.uk/whatsymbolsmean.html) then make sure you are using the correct amount of detergent. Always read the detergent manufactures instructions regarding how much detergent you should be using. Heavily soiled items may require a pre wash programme.

Drum Bearing failure

I do not repair drum bearings due to the amount of time required to do these repairs. It is more cost effective for you to get this repair done by either the manufacturer or a company that operates with a fixed price repair. Drum bearing failure will be noticeable by a loud noise during the spin cycle or the drum will stop rotating as the belt has come of the pulley.
